I’ve blogged before about the power a good BHAG (Big Hairy Audacious Goal) brings to an organization.  Provides vision, focus, inspiration, and determination.

Yesterday, at the Sales and Marketing Society Lunch, I enjoyed Richard Shadyac, CEO of ALSAC, the funding raising arm of St. Jude Children’s Hospital, discuss how Danny Thomas would explain his dream of St. Jude to people he didn’t even know, and inspire them to help him and donate as well.  This is was in 1962 way before Jim Collins defined the term BHAG.

“I’m going to build a children’s hospital.  We are going to treat catastrophic diseases at this hospital. No family will pay, treatment will be free.  We are going to build it in the South.  Are you in?”

It’s quite the BHAG, and still drives St. Jude and ALSAC today in 2011, 49 years later.
