Learned something at today’s book review of What Matters Now by Gary Hamel.

No one likes change.  But the biggest obstacles business leaders face in trying to keep up with the ever faster changing business world is affection for and commitment to legacy products and services that aren’t keeping up.

Whether it is fond affection, or misguided confidence in what has always worked,  hanging on to a legacy business product or service or procedure prevents a focus on innovation that will bring growth.  People try to keep improving something that has a decreasing utility in the eyes of the customer.  But the customers are starting to move on and you can’t fight that.  Time for you to move on to innovations that the customers want.

Don’t give up the legacy values and purpose of your organization. Let these items guide you through the change.
